International Meeting on Paleoclimate: Change and Adaptation

Coimbra (Portugal), 18-19 June, 2019

The Directors of the Geosciences Centre (CGEO) and of the Centre for Earth and Space Research (CITEUC) of the University of Coimbra (Portugal) have the pleasure of inviting members of your institution to participate in the International Meeting on “Paleoclimate: Change and Adaptation”, to be held at the University of Coimbra (Portugal), on the 18^th-19^th June, 2019.

The goal of this meeting is to stimulate an observational attitude and to promote an open discussion on paleoclimatic signals in order to improve our look at the present and to ground future perspectives.

Research topics covers, without being limited to, the following areas:

T1 - Paleoclimates in the Solar System: external forcing and divergent evolutions

T2 - Climate changes in geological time: lessons to learn 

T3 - Climate memory in the geological record 

T4 - Climate changes and human adaptations throughout the Quaternary 

T5 - Climatic events and human-environment interactions in the Holocene

For those willing to publish expanded scientific papers after the conference a joint Special Issue for the “International Meeting on Paleoclimate” meeting will be launched by Geosciences (ISSN 2076-3263; CODEN: GBSEDA), an interdisciplinary, international peer-reviewed open access journal of geoscience, future earth and planetary science published monthly online by MDPI.

Dear Colleagues!

The Institute of Applied Geosciences at Graz University of Technology invites applications for a 3 years full?time Postdoctoral Researcher position in Isotope Geochemistry and Mineralogy funded through the recently funded FWF Met-Proxies project. The earliest starting date is May 1, 2019.

The goal of Met-Proxies project is to experimentally quantify and assess the degree of incorporation and isotopic fractionation of copper and zinc into carbonate minerals. Results will be used to develop novel and advanced geochemical tools and proxies for the estimation, monitoring and reconstruction of physicochemical conditions like pH value and biological activity in geological and modern environmental settings. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in geochemistry, mineralogy or a related subject. A strong background in aqueous or isotope geochemistry and hands on experience in experimental and analytical techniques is highly desirable. Experience with mineralogical/chemical characterization and/or Multicollector ICP?MS techniques is considered an asset.

The Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (INVOLCAN) & the University of La Laguna (ULL) are co-organizing the 2019 TENERIFE INTERNATIONAL TRAINING COURSE ON VOLCANO MONITORING (http://www.involcan.org/tenerife-international-training-course-on-volcano-monitoring/) which will take place at Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) from May 23 to 29, 2019.

The increase in world population, particularly in urban areas close to active volcanoes, is constantly raising the level of volcanic risk worldwide. Volcano Monitoring is one of the key tools for mitigating this risk, alongside an estimation of volcanic hazards. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the subject of Volcano Monitoring ?hands on? by alternating lectures with practical laboratory and field activities. Lessons will be given by researchers with an international scientific background and first-hand experience of Volcano Monitoring. Monitoring volcanoes is a highly multidisciplinary field. The course topics will cover Seismology (basic theory and analysis of seismo-volcanic events), Geodesy (measurement and modelling of ground deformation), Geochemistry (collection, analysis and interpretation of fluid samples) as well as other topics (thermal imagery, volcano infrasound, methods for eruption forecasting). Field activities include visits to the monitoring networks managed by INVOLCAN, as well as practical demonstrations of geochemical measurements on the field. Furthermore, there will be two field trips to Teide volcano, Las Cañadas caldera and outcrops of volcanic events all around the island.

The prerequisites for attending this course are basic skills in Earth Sciences, as well as a basic knowledge of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The course language will be English and those students who will attend this course will be able to obtain to 2 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) from  the University of La Laguna. The cost of this training course is 650 ?, and it will cover tuition + accommodation for two students in a double room on a half board basis.

Por ocasião do 20º aniversário da realização do 1º Seminário sobre o Património Geológico Português, a Universidade do Minho organiza as Jornadas de Património Geológico e Geoconservação, a 2 e 3 de maio de 2019.

Pretende-se realizar um balanço sobre o desenvolvimento da geoconservação em Portugal nas últimas duas décadas e identificar os desafios para o futuro, através da discussão de temas centrais do património geológico e da geoconservação em sessões de debate e mesa-redonda e em apresentações pelos participantes.
